What Does It Mean To Be A 'Woman"?
What does being a woman truly mean? Good question right? When we decided to choose this topic, I thought I knew what it meant to be a woman, but I wanted to see what Google thought. So I opened up a browser and researched the definition of “woman”:
1. The female human being (distinguished from man)
2. An adult female person
3. A female attendant to a lady of rank
4. A wife
5. Refers to an adult human being who is biologically female; that is, capable of bearing offspring
6. The nature, characteristics, or feelings often attributed to women
Needless to say…I was disappointed…And I had Questions.
What does it mean to be distinguished from a man? Was I supposed to be constantly defining myself against men? So if men are big, then women must be small? And if men are strong, then women must be weak? What does it mean by nature, characteristics or feeling attributed to women? With so many different representations of womanhood, who gets to decide what constitutes womanhood and what it means to be a woman? What if I don't identify with any of these? Does that make me less of a woman?
I think one of the unfortunate traits of human nature is that we feel a need to categorize people and this is evident in how we categorize women. We limit them and we say that she is, “that kind of woman,” and that kind of woman is categorized as one who is traditional or modern or a feminist or not a feminist or liberal or conservative or a virgin or a whore. The list goes on.
If we want to shatter the glass ceiling, we must first learn to move beyond biology and give ourselves permission to become anything we want to be.
In Lue of International Women's Day (IWD) I am challenging you to #BeBoldForChange.
If you aren't familiar with International Women's Day (March 8), it's a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Last year, organizations and individuals around the world supported the #PledgeForParity campaign and committed to help women and girls achieve their ambitions; challenge conscious and unconscious bias; call for gender-balanced leadership; value women and men's contributions equally; and create inclusive flexible cultures.
This year's theme is #BeBoldForChange where we call on the masses to take groundbreaking action that truly drives the greatest change for women.
Each one of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence by taking bold, strategic action for change. Through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over.
International Woman's Day isn't just for women to rally together to force feminist views on everyone. It is a time where the whole nation, men and woman, come together to celebrate the true meaning of being a woman and what it means to society.
And the one thing she never understood,
she now knows to be true,
it all begins and ends with you.
I am the Earth.
I am the World.
I. AM. WOMAN.
